Back in May when the first Mike Tyson training video was posted, I was impressed. More than impressed, I was terrified. Chiseled. Violent. Fast. Mean. The man is unmatched physically. We watched in awe at the unbridled fury Iron Mike was showing at 53 years old as he trained at the speed of a man half his age. The last thing on my mind was a possible boxing comeback by the legend himself. But here we are, Thursday, July 23, and as I check Twitter this morning I see the news that Mike will come back to fight fellow retired icon Roy Jones Jr in an eight round exhibition match.
Although I don't follow the sport closely or even tune in for every fight, I fully realize the importance of this announcement. Everyone knows the legendary Mike Tyson, whether it be for his antics outside of the ring, or the legendary performances he had while in it. Him coming back for one last fight is special in that it allows my generation to see his greatness on live TV, even if he is out of his prime. In Mike’s last fight before his retirement, he took an L to Kevin McBride in a bizarre fight. I´ll be curious to see how he matches up to a fighter that is at the same point in their post-career instead of a younger fighter.
Mike vs. Roy Jones Jr. was a fight that the world never had the privilege to watch when they were both in their primes and while this will most likely not be the jaw dropping back and forth slugfest that it could’ve been 25 years ago, it will be interesting to see how they match up. In an interview they had earlier today they both talked about how they had agreed to not go for KO’s, so that makes me wonder how Mike Tyson will fare as a fighter who was known to knock his opponents out in 30 seconds in his most dominant days.
As a sports fan who has been craving sports for the past four months, this was great news to wake up to. Seeing two legends come back for one last fight will be a momentous event that will surely be worth tuning into.
Sidenote: News just broke that ex-NBA player Nate Robinson will be fighting YouTube star Jake Paul as an undercard to this fight. This might be the last fight I would expect to go along with Tyson vs. Jones, but I'm not complaining. From what I have seen from both Jake and Nate, they have larger than life personalities that will make the night of the fights a night to remember. Viewers, prepare to expect the unexpected in what should be a wild night of pure chaos.
